Lollapalooza History

Lollapalooza Stage

Perry Farrell, lead singer of rock band Jane’s Addiction, created the Lollapalooza music festival (aka”Lolla”) in 1991. Originally the event was a music tour with stops throughout North America. This format continued until 1997, and resumed in 2003 after a five year hiatus. Lack of interest led to the events cancellation in 2004. The festival resumed in 2005, at which point the event changed formats and turned into an annual festival during the summer in Chicago.

Music

Alternative music, punk rock, and grunge were some of the music genres in the early days of the festival. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden and The Smashing Pumpkins, and Metallica were some of the hot artists who performed. Electronic music made its entrance in 1997 with the inclusion of The Prodigy and The Orb. In the late 90’s alternative music declined in popularity which contributed to Lollapalooza’s cancellation after the 1997 event.

2005 Revival

When Lollapalooza started up again in 2005, it was a two day festival held at Grant Park in Chicago. This location turned into the permanent spot for the festival. The turnout in 2005 was huge, with over 70 performers and five stages. Lollapalooza even bigger over the years with a lineup of 180 performers in 2018. Covid led to the festivals cancellation in 2020. A YouTube streaming broadcast replaced the in-person event. The streamed event featured live and recorded performances and replays of show from prior years. Jane’s Addiction, Kaskade, and LL COOL J were a few of the highlights. Lollapalooza resumed in 2021 and Hulu was given exclusive rights to stream the event in 2022 and 2023.

Upgrades were available and prices were as high as $1,500 for VIP tickets, and $4,200 for platinum tickets.
